Whitehorse Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for help to identify a man following a vehicle theft and subsequent deceptions in Mount Waverley.
It is understood a man stole a 2010 Toyota Camry that had been parked on Douglass Avenue, Box Hill South sometime between 12am and 7am on 28 April.
A short time later, the same man is believed to have used credit cards stolen from a wallet in the vehicle to purchase cigarettes at a service station on Waverley Road, Mount Waverley.
Further purchases were also made at service stations in Chadstone and Ashwood.
The car was later recovered on 5 May following a collision in Burwood at the intersection of Elgar Road and Burwood Highway.
It is understood a man and woman, believed to be aged in their 20s, were seen fleeing from the car on foot.
Police have released images and CCTV of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
He is perceived as Caucasian in appearance, about 20 to 30 years old and 175cm tall with a medium build.
The man was wearing a heavy grey hooded jacket, green beanie and black scarf at the time.
