Disaster assistance is available to another six local governments in Central Queensland, including the Gulf of Carpentaria’s Mornington Shire Council, in the wake of Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor.
Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Minister for Emergency Management and North Queensland Recovery Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the assistance would help communities with their recovery efforts.
“Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor impacted Queensland twice—crossing Cape York as a Category 3 cyclone on 19 March 2019 and returning as a low pressure system with flooding rain to Central and West Queensland communities,” Minister Reynolds said.
“Financial assistance is now available for Barcaldine Shire, Barcoo Shire, Blackall-Tambo Shire, Burke Shire, Longreach region and Mornington Shire to help fund clean-up operations and restore public infrastructure damaged by the cyclone.”
Mr Crawford said the Commonwealth and Queensland governments were working together to support the long-term recovery of communities.
“Cyclone Trevor brought heavy rainfall, which caused flash flooding and damaged essential public assets in Central Queensland,” Mr Crawford said.
“In addition, the remote community on Mornington Island was severely affected by Trevor.
“This funding will help these local government areas alleviate the cost of counter-disaster operations including sand bagging, tree clearing, and repairing damage to roads.”
A range of DRFA assistance measures are now available in Aurukun, Barcaldine, Barcoo, Blackall-Tambo, Burke, Boulia, Cloncurry, Cook, Diamantina, Lockhart River, Longreach, and Mornington.
