Disaster assistance is now available for residents in Central Australia affected by the flooding which occurred from 9 – 14 November 2021.

Assistance is being provided for the local government areas of Alice Springs, the Central Desert and MacDonnell through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said the record-breaking rain event caused the Todd River to burst its banks, causing flooding through Alice Springs, bringing down powerlines, damaging roads and creating a dangerous situation for local residents.

“The Australian and Northern Territory governments are working together to ensure those who have been impacted can receive the support they need, including personal and financial counselling,” Minister McKenzie said.

“Low income home owners whose homes have suffered damage will have access to grants for essential structural repairs. We continue to work with communities to assist in rebuilding after such significant events.”

Acting Chief Minister of the Northern Territory Nicole Manison thanked the Commonwealth for its support.

“We acknowledge this flooding has had a big impact on Central Australia, and now a range of support payments can be accessed to help residents and the community recover.

“We will continue to engage with those on the ground in Central Australia, to ensure they receive appropriate support.”
