Diversity, inclusion and IDAHOBIT Day in Bayside

Today marks International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)- a day to raise awareness for the work still needed to combat violence and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities.

Bayside City Council CEO Mick Cummins said that Council will continue to explore authentic and meaningful ways we can support our LGBTQIA+ community in Bayside.

“Last year, we raised the rainbow flag at Council Chambers on IDAHOBIT Day to show our solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community in Bayside for the first time,” Mr Cummins said.

“One year on, a fourth flag pole has been installed at Bayside’s Corporate Centre to permanently fly the rainbow flag and we marched in our first Midsumma pride march to be loud and proud in our allyship with the LGBTQIA+ community.”

“We’re committed to supporting our LGBTQIA+ community and we stand in solidarity against discrimination of any kind,” Mr Cummins said.

The rainbow flag has also been raised at Council Chambers again this year to mark IDAHOBIT Day.

In 2017, 76 per cent of local residents in the Goldstein electorate voted for marriage equality and our residents are passionate about caring for community life in Bayside, making it an inclusive, active, healthy, connected and creative experience for all.

A key pillar of the Bayside 2050 Community Vision is that every member of the Bayside community is celebrated, included and feels they belong in Bayside.

“We’re listening to our community and taking responsibility for our role in making Bayside a better place for everybody,” Mr Cummins said.
