Do or die for Donations Reform Bill 08 November 2023

Tas Labor

The minority Liberal government must prove it is serious about political donations reform by progressing its own reform legislation this week.

This is important legislation and if the government was truly committed to donations reform and transparency, it would have done everything it could to get it passed.

But the lack of progress to date is evidence that they are not committed to getting their own reforms in place in time for the next election – adding to their litany of broken promises.

Tasmanians deserve to be able to trust that politicians are making decisions in the best interests of the community but, until we have laws governing political donations, there will be no real transparency.

With the end of the parliamentary year fast approaching, if this Bill is not debated in the Legislative Council this week, the opportunity for reform before the end of the year becomes less and less likely.

Labor remains committed to further reform and will introduce a Private Members Bill as soon as we can to progress the amendments we have foreshadowed to ensure Tasmanians can have faith in the political process.
