Does Peter Gutwein have compassion needed?

Tasmanian Labor
  • Legislative Councillors worked together to pass draft VAD bill
  • Onus now on Peter Gutwein’s government to demonstrate compassion
  • Tasmanian community expects the bill to be implemented
  • The fate of the End of Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill 2020 now rests with the Liberal government.

Shadow Minister for Health Sarah Lovell said there was never a more appropriate time for Peter Gutwein to demonstrate the compassion he professed when he became Premier.

“Members of the Legislative Council have taken great care and engaged deeply with members of the community leading up to today’s vote.

“The debate has been conducted with civility, decency, respect and genuine engagement, and the focus has been on the needs of terminally ill Tasmanians.

“I am disappointed, and the Labor party is disappointed, that we won’t be able to finalise this Bill and pass it this year. The delay will cause unnecessary hurt and confusion for those across our community who are desperate to see laws passed.”

Labor MLC for Huon Dr Bastian Seidel said there is a clear desire in the community to pass legislation that is cohesive, patient focused and evidence based.

“The community expects that the voluntary assisted dying bill will now be introduced in the House of Assembly without further delay.

“Everything that can be said with regard to eligibility, safeguards and oversight has been said in our extensive debate over recent weeks.

There is no place for inappropriate politicking, grandstanding or filibustering.

“Terminally ill patients who do not find answers in current and contemporary care expect their parliamentarians to deliver. And there is no excuse for not doing that.”
