Dog park shaping up as best in show

The Thomas Oval Dog Park in South Yarra will soon have tails wagging, with construction well underway and on track for a late-2022 opening.

What began as an under-utilised green space at the river end of Como Park North is taking shape as Stonnington’s first park dedicated to canine good times!

We’re now a couple of months into the expected six-month build, and there’s plenty of activity happening on the ground. The site has been fenced off, the old turf removed and soils and materials brought in to create the undulating design features of the new park.

When complete, the fully-fenced dog park will feature a large lawn area, lots of interesting play elements to climb on or under, places to dig and a separate fenced area for quieter dogs. Doggie drink fountains, a network of paths, garden beds, lighting plus a shelter and seating will add to make this the perfect patch to visit all year round.

The dog park design was informed by an engagement program dating back to July 2020 when we asked the community to tell us what features they would like to see in a dog-friendly space. What we heard helped inform a draft park design that was shared with the community in early-2021 and, responding to resident feedback, resulted in the park being made bigger than originally planned.

The dog park is being funded through the city’s annual financial budget, plus $275,000 awarded under the Victorian Government Local Parks Program.

Subject to weather plus time for the turf to establish, we expect the Thomas Oval Dog Park will open towards the end of the year.
