Influential figures from some of the State’s largest organisations and community groups will oversee the next phase of the Queensland Government’s domestic and family violence reform agenda.
The Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council will serve a 12-month term, led by two experienced co-Chairs – outgoing Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council Chair, Ms Kay McGrath and former Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson AO APM.
The council will be further-supported by a newly-created Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Champions Group, to be launched next year.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the establishment of the new council at the Not Now, Not Ever. Together Breakfast– an event shining a spotlight on the ongoing corporate and community-led responses to domestic and family violence.
“Last month my Government announced all 140 recommendations of the landmark Not Now, Not Ever Report had been delivered, supported by a record investment of $328.9 million over six years and overseen by our Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council,” the Premier said.
“With the cooperation of hard-working teams across Government and the community, we introduced new laws, initiatives and infrastructure to make a profound difference in the lives of Queenslanders impacted by domestic and family violence.
“In recognition of the work still to be done, next month we will establish the new Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council.”
Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer, said the council would provide oversee the recently-released Third Action Plan of the 10-year Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy 2016-2026.
“It will build momentum to increase corporate and community-led activity in the spirit of “Not Now, Not Ever.Together,” Ms Farmer said.
“Our best chance of ending domestic and family violence is to present a united front – that’s Government, business, community organisations, our health and education sectors all working toward the same vision.
“I’d like to thank the corporate and community organisations who attended today’s Not Now, Not Ever. Together Breakfast and committed to actions to ensure we grow a culture of respect in every household, workplace, school and community group.”
