The Tasmanian Government has today released the Draft Greyhound Racing Transition Plan, marking an important step in delivering its commitment to phase out greyhound racing in Tasmania by 30 June 2029.
The Draft Transition Plan provides a structured, fair and considered pathway for the phaseout of greyhound racing, ensuring the welfare of racing greyhounds and support for industry participants through a managed transition process.
Minister for Racing, Roger Jaensch, said the development of a Transition Plan is an important part of our Greyhound Racing Legislation Amendments (Phase Out Reform) Bill 2025, which is currently before the Legislative Council.
“Our Government is delivering a sensible and measured phase out of greyhound racing which has participant and animal welfare at its core,” Minister Jaensch said.
“With the Bill before the Parliament, the Draft Transition Plan cannot be finalised until the Bill has been passed.
“We’re working to provide Legislative Councillors with as much information as we possibly can by sharing the Draft Transition Plan which details the proposed transition, informs stakeholders and generates feedback to inform the final Plan.
“I want to thank the Racing Integrity Commissioner, his team and advisory committee for their work on the Draft Transition Plan, to deliver the Government’s phaseout.”
Progress is also continuing on the Voluntary Exit Scheme, which was announced earlier this year.
“The Scheme will provide immediate support for greyhound racing participants who wish to exit the industry by 31 December 2026, delivering greater certainty while work continues on the long-term transition,” Minister Jaensch said.
