Drink and drug drivers caught during traffic operation, South Australia

South Australia Police spent the weekend targeting drink and drug driving for Operation High Impact F5 (Fatal Five), an intensive month-long traffic enforcement operation.

Over 3,000 motorists were breath tested across a two-day period, with 23 people returning a positive blood alcohol test, including a provisional licence holder.

From 65 drug tests, a total of eight drivers were found with drugs in their system. Five of those drivers tested positive for methamphetamine while the rest tested positive for THC.

The driver testing was held within the Adelaide CBD on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 November.

Superintendent Bob Gray, the Officer in Charge of the Traffic Services Branch, hopes to see these positive readings dwindle as Operation High Impact F5 continues.

“Although thousands of drivers were found to be doing the right thing during these tests, there’s still a percentage of people who are doing the opposite,” he said.

“It’s that percentage of people who are contributing to the carnage on our roads.

“It’s easy to assume that 23 positive blood alcohol readings out of over 3,000 is a good result, but that’s still 23 too many.

“That’s still 23 people who could’ve killed your sister, your brother, your parents or your partner from selfish driver behaviour.

“There’s just no excuse for getting behind the wheel while drunk or on drugs.”

Operation High Impact F5 is targeting the fatal five offences of drink and drug driving, speeding, distraction, seatbelts and dangerous road users.

The operation began at 12:01am Thursday 14 November 2019 and will end at 11:59pm Wednesday 11 December 2019.
