In the lead up to this year’s Supercars Australia event, NSW Police are urging motorists to travel safely as they make their way to Mount Panorama this weekend.
Although traffic will be considerably down on previous years, general duties and specialist police will be out in force targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use and seat-belt offences.
Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie, said road safety is everyone’s responsibility and motorists should avoid putting themselves and other road users at risk.
“There will be a significant police presence on all roads leading to Bathurst and people should obey the road rules, particularly speed limits,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
“Dangerous or irresponsible behavior by drivers will not be tolerated and people should do everything they can to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them.
“Random drug and alcohol testing will be in place in and around Bathurst, and people are urged to take precautions to make sure they arrive safely and get home from the event in one piece.
“Driver behavior contributes to the large majority of fatal and injury crashes, so people need to drive to the conditions that are prevailing at the time, show patience and courtesy to other road users,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
Operation Bathurst, a high-visibility police operation – which will also target anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence – will run from Thursday 15 October until Sunday 18 October 2020.
