Driving towards cleaner future

EV fleet announcement Joseph Haweil.JPG

Hume City Council is proud to announce the introduction of the first electric vehicles (EVs) to our fleet.

Four new MG electric vehicles join our gradually transitioning fleet of council cars which already includes a Renault Kangoo EV van, two Toyota Corolla Hybrids and a Toyota Camry Hybrid, significantly reducing our fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

The new EVs will be used by Council staff visiting new parents, our library outreach team, the signage team and our IT department which delivers on-site service to the 63 Council staffed sites.

The new fleet is being powered by Zero Greenhouse energy at our Coolaroo Depot and Broadmeadows Office and is part of our transition to be more self-sufficient on renewable energies.

This move comes on the back of the launch of the Northern Council Alliance’s ‘Regional Transport Advocacy and Community Electric Vehicle Transition Plan’ on Thursday 5 October that will help councils make decisions on moving towards cleaner vehicles.

The Alliance is made up of six local councils, including Hume City, and is working collaboratively to better prepare Melbourne’s north for an EV transition via its ‘Community Electric Vehicle Transition Plan‘.

Hume City Council recently endorsed a new Climate Action Plan 2023–2028 that includes a carbon neutral target for Council operations by 2030.

The increase in our electric fleet meets the plan’s aims “to enhance and expand Council’s response to the ongoing effects of climate change” – and is one step of many on our journey towards a cleaner future.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hume City, Cr. Joseph Haweil:

“At 7 per cent, Hume City has the second highest rate of private electric vehicle ownership in Melbourne, and we know that as people become more environmentally conscious this trend will continue to grow.

“By transitioning our fleet of council cars to EVs we’re showing we strongly support the move towards more sustainable transport options.

“As Hume residents advocate for us to provide EV charging stations, we will continue to work with the state and federal governments to ensure we have the funding to support the north’s transition to sustainable transport.”
