Drug import charges laid after MDMA located in protein powder from UK, NSW

A man will face court today charged by NSW Police Force over the importation of MDMA, which was detected by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers.

Last Friday (18 October 2019), ABF officers located MDMA concealed within protein powder, which arrived in an air cargo consignment from the United Kingdom.

ABF officers identified and examined the package, which led to a presumptive test returning positive results for 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA).

The drugs had a total weight of 500g, which could be cut with other agents to produce up to 8000 pills with an estimated potential street value of more than $200,000.

The matter was referred to detectives from Sydney City Police Area Command, who commenced an investigation under Strike Force Dobem.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives, assisted by officers from Operation Odin, executed a search warrant at a home unit in Sydney CBD about 10.40am yesterday (Wednesday 23 October 2019).

During the search, police seized 500 pills, believed to be MDMA; powder substances suspected of being cocaine and methylamphetamine, LSD, a large quality of various prescription medications, drug paraphernalia and items consistent with drug supply, and $7000 cash.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Day Street Police Station.

The man was charged with import marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug, supply commercial quantity of prohibited drug, and deal in proceeds of crime.

He has been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court later today (Thursday 24 October 2019).

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information in relation the importation and supply of illicit drugs is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
