Dust storm today prompts health warning

NSW Health iswarning people to be aware of the health risks as a large dust storm moves across NSW, bringingincreased dust to Sydney and the east coast.

Director of Environmental Health, Dr RichardBroome said people with chronic respiratoryand cardiovascular conditions should cut back or reschedule strenuous outdooractivities.
“Dust may aggravate existing heart and lungconditions and cause symptoms like irritated eyes and a cough,” DrBroome said.
“People with conditions including asthma,chronic bronchitis, emphysema and heart disease should monitor their symptomsthroughout the day.
“People with asthmashould followtheir Asthma Action Planand it’s a good idea to make sure you carry your reliever puffer with you.”
Air quality in the Sydney basin is expected to worsen during the daybefore a cold front brings rain later on Wednesday afternoon.
In northern parts of the State levels of dust are forecast to increasein the afternoon and evening.
“Symptoms can occur for several days after dust is inhaled, so peoplewith chronic conditions need to be vigilant with their treatment programs,” DrBroome said.
