Dutton’s cuts would kill Marinus and Tasmanian jobs 29 August 2024

Peter Dutton’s recent announcement that he would abolish the Rewiring the Nation Fund would kill Marinus Link and the tens of billions of dollars of investment it will bring to Tasmania.

Shadow Minister for Energy & Renewables Janie Finlay said the policy would be a disaster for Tasmania’s economy.

“Peter Dutton’s policy means windfarms across Tasmania, including at Robbins Island and Whaleback Ridge, will not proceed, costing thousands of jobs across the North West,” she said.

“It is the most anti-development policy in living memory. It is the sort of job-destroying policy we would normally associate with the Greens.”

Ms Finlay also called on Premier Jeremy Rockliff to stand up to his Federal Leader.

“With Peter Dutton due to touch down in Tasmania’s north this weekend, Jeremy Rockliff needs to stand up to his leader’s anti-jobs budget cuts.”

“Anything else and Tasmanians will once again see Jeremy Rockliff putting his own political survival ahead of Tasmania’s best interests – just like he keeps doing with his failing minority government,” Ms Finlay said.

Federal Minister for Climate Change & Energy Chris Bowen highlighted the particular threat to Tasmania from Peter Dutton’s budget cuts.

“Tasmanians might think their energy future is secure, but under a Peter Dutton government David Littleproud would be writing the energy policy. That means no renewables and no Marinus,” he said.

Tasmanian Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs, and unlike the Liberals, we understand just how critical renewable energy development is for Tasmania’s economic future.
