e-Transport package delivering on Climate Change Action Plan

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Environment and Climate Change

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to supporting the uptake of e-transport to reduce emissions.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Roger Jaensch, said the Government’s e-Transport package is delivering on actions in our Climate Change Action Plan.

“Transport is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions,” Minister Jaensch said.

“Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan includes actions to reduce emissions from our transport sector by increasing the uptake of electric vehicles, and public and active transport.

“Our Government’s e-Transport package will provide rebates on the purchase of electric vehicles and e-mobility devices such as e-bikes, as well as interest free loans for home chargers.

“The electric vehicle rebate program aims to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Tasmania by providing rebates of $2000 to individuals on the purchase of eligible vehicles.

“Importantly, these rebates are on eligible purchases of new battery electric vehicles and second-hand electric vehicles that are newly registered in Tasmania.

“We are also introducing a rebate program for e-mobility devices which is a first of its kind in Australia.”

The e-mobility rebate program supports Tasmanians to purchase an e-mobility device such as e-bike, e-scooter, e-skateboard or cargo e-bike for their daily commute.

Rebates will be available following the purchase of an eligible device, for up to the following amounts:

  • $250 for e-scooters and skateboards
  • $500 for e-bikes
  • $1000 for cargo e-bikes

The Government is also providing interest free loans to install home chargers for electric vehicles. Loans through the energy saver loan scheme will soon be announced.

This scheme provides interest free loans of between $5000 to $10,000, over three years, for energy efficient products.

Minister Jaensch said the e-transport package will provide attractive financial incentives to the greatest number of consumers as well as increasing the uptake of active transport for health and wellbeing co-benefits.

“The package will reduce Tasmania’s transport emissions by encouraging consumers to replace internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles and personal devices,” Minister Jaensch said.

“It will increase purchases of electric vehicles and devices which may not have taken place without the support of the program.
