Easing path for supermarket deliveries

The City of
Greater Geelong has announced it will not be enforcing restrictions on truck
delivery times to supermarkets while essential items are in short supply.

The measure is aimed at helping vulnerable community members gain access to
urgently needed supplies during the Coronavirus pandemic, as supermarkets seek
to replenish their shelves.

Councillors and City leaders are investigating further short-term initiatives
to support the community and local businesses during this challenging time.
These will be announced as they are confirmed.

Mayor Stephanie Asher:

I fully support this suggestion, which came from
councillor Aitken. It’s a small but positive step that we believe will help the
community.

Panic buying has depleted supermarket supplies, and this is causing serious
issues for vulnerable people who need regular and easy access to essential
items. We support supermarkets doing whatever’s needed, and my understanding is
that deliveries that were happening twice weekly are now being made daily.
Anything we can do to help facilitate that, we will.

Councillor Anthony Aitken:

Councillors are actively looking for ways to help our community as the
impacts of the pandemic hit. Supermarket shortages have been one of the immediate
impacts, and we need to do what we can to help everyone get the food and other
items they need.

I also echo our federal and state leaders in asking for stockpiling to stop.
