Economy taking a nose dive under Liberal Government 07 September 2023

Tas Labor

After 10 years in office, the Liberal Government continues to break promises and push Tasmania further into debt with their economic mismanagement.

National Accounts data released yesterday shows that Tasmania’s economy has been in decline for the past nine months – the only state in the nation to go backwards.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff and his government are not performing extraordinarily well as they claim – they are running our economy to the ground.

Exports are down, business confidence is lagging and households continue to be put under considerable stress with cost of living challenges.

The minority Liberal Government could do more to assist those feeling the pinch, including a cap to power prices which they have voted against three times.

Power prices have increased by 22.5 per cent and the average household is now paying $500 extra while businesses can’t access the power they need to expand their operations.

The Rockliff Government is not doing nearly enough to boost the state’s economy and support Tasmanians doing it tough.

A Labor Government will cap power prices at 2.5 per cent a year for all households and small businesses in the first 100 days of government and we will also re-establish the electricity rebate scheme that was in place in 2018.

Tasmanians deserve to pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power and a Labor will ensure this happens both now and in the future.
