Electricity customers slugged with new charge … but Barnett claims to be in dark

  • New secret charge costs customers hundreds
  • Barnett not across his responsibilities if he’s not aware
  • Tasmanian families and businesses are being slugged with a significant sneaky new charge – but the Energy Minister claims to know nothing about it.

Shadow Treasurer and Energy Minister David O’Byrne said consumers had been hit with the new charge of up to $500 by TasNetworks for a fuse connector instalment without prior notification.

“This would normally be a network charge not an additional fee,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“And it would normally be no higher than $100 but TasNetworks are charging between $400 and $500.

“Today the Energy Minister Guy Barnett and TasNetwork chiefs told Government Business Enterprise scrutiny hearings that they were not aware of the sneaky charge.

“If that’s the case Mr Barnett needs to get across his areas of responsibility to electricity consumers. “Once he’s done that, he needs to investigate and fix it.”
