Emergency Situation Declared

NT Government

The Territory Government is declaring an Emergency Situation in Alice Springs.

The unrest which unfolded yesterday was unacceptable and the Territory Government will not stand for it. We are taking action now to prevent it happening again.

This declaration allows for a curfew for people under 18 years old. This curfew will be enforced by police.

There will be more than 50 extra police deployed in Alice Springs as soon as possible. This is on top of the 23 members of the Territory Safety Division, who are in Alice Springs right now.

The curfew will run for 14 days and cover the Alice Springs CBD – this period includes Easter and the school holidays. The curfew will start tonight.

If someone under 18 years old is in the CBD past 6pm and before 6am without a valid reason they will be taken home or to a safe place.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister Eva Lawler:

“Enough is enough. I have heard the community and my Government is acting.

“Alice Springs residents and businesses deserve every support to get through this period and that’s exactly what we are doing.

“We’re working with police to introduce a curfew in Alice Springs to keep the community safe.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Police Brent Potter:

“We are responding to unacceptable, abhorrent behaviour across Alice Springs.”

“The Territory Safety Division has a 23 strong team in Alice Springs right now conducting operations to apprehend all involved in the unrest, these officers will be supported by another 58 police on their way to Alice Springs right now.”

“This is not just a policing issue, we must collaborate with community leaders to keep Alice Springs safe.”
