Employees Beat Heat At Appreciation Luncheon

Despite temperatures climbing into the 90s, Barton Hall offered more than just relief from the summer heat – it became a space where employees could take a moment to celebrate the work that keeps Cornell running.

On July 1, more than 1,000 employees across campus gathered for an appreciation luncheon hosted by the Division of Human Resources, celebrating the university’s workforce and honoring staff members who reached milestones in their careers.

Attendees enjoyed lunch, a photo booth and music by DJ ha-MEEN, also known as Ben Ortiz, collection specialist for the Cornell Hip Hop Collection. Videos highlighted pop culture, world events and memorable moments from each milestone year.

More than 400 staff members were recognized for reaching 25 to 50 years of service, representing nearly 12,000 years of collective work at Cornell. Honorees received commemorative certificates, pins and pennants.

“Cornell is a very special community to me,” said President Michael I. Kotlikoff, who addressed the attendees. “It’s comprised of individuals who have an extraordinary commitment to this university. The sense of belonging, collaboration and shared mission of our staff often keeps people here at Cornell for their entire careers. Our longest-serving staff members make a unique and irreplaceable contribution to this community. You are the storehouse of institutional knowledge and valuable in every department and unit of Cornell.”

Sean Moeller, interim vice president and chief human resources officer, thanked employees for their impact and recognized their important role in shaping Cornell’s community and culture.

“Over the years, you’ve helped move us forward through growth, challenge and transformation,” Moeller said. “You’ve adapted, innovated and led by example, and you’ve mentored colleagues, shared experiences and helped create a workplace [where] people feel supported and inspired to do their best work. This is an opportunity to pause and celebrate those contributions.”

In addition to recognizing milestone service awardees, Kotlikoff also congratulated employees participating in the 2026 Staff Voluntary Retirement Incentive program, which was implemented to provide a structured, voluntary pathway to retirement. He also thanked staff for helping the university weather a challenging year.

“Our staff has stood together, and we are deeply, deeply appreciative,” Kotlikoff said. “So, thank you, all of you, for everything that you do and all the contributions that you’ve made to Cornell.”
