- WA Energy Minister meets Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources
- Memorandum of Understanding signed between battery research centres
- Supports closer cooperation between the regions in energy and mineral resources
Western Australian Energy Minister Bill Johnston led a WA delegation including Horizon Power and industry, to meet with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia.
Talks, held earlier this week, revolved around opportunities for cooperation and the shared challenges facing WA and Indonesia, as they transition toward net zero, including energy distribution to remote communities and carbon capture and storage.
Discussions also focused on identifying new sources of energy, and the actions required for the transition.
Indonesia is the world’s largest exporter of coal, however, they have significant potential to generate renewable energy through geothermal, hydropower, solar and other sources.
Representatives from Horizon Power and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) are participating in the Indonesia Connect Roadshow.
Horizon Power representatives shared their experience in deploying low carbon technology solutions to respond to unique challenges in small, isolated microgrids in regional WA.
The Minister witnessed a Memorandum of Understanding signing between Australia’s Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre and Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute. The two organisations are committed to work together in capacity building, education and training, developing the battery ecosystem and battery standardisation.
The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in battery research, technology and innovation between Australia and Indonesia, and aligns with the ‘Plan of Action’ on cooperation in critical minerals signed between WA and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) in July 2023.
The Cook Government is currently leading the State’s largest overseas investment and trade mission.
The mission, led by Premier Cook, is made up of 130 WA business, industry, media and Government representatives, providing a platform to promote the State as a recognised and trusted partner in Indonesia.
As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:

“These engagements, including the MoU signing between Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre and the National Battery Research Institute, demonstrate the potential for cooperation.
“I’m looking forward to continuing our productive and resourceful relationship as both regions work towards a green energy future.”
