Engaging on our southern future

The University’s Appreciative Inquiry summit to inform its future southern campus in the city of Hobart opened at Mac02 today (Wednesday, 27 November).

A Welcome to Country was performed by celebrated singer Dewayne Everittsmith and well-respected Tasmanian Aboriginal community member Janice Ross.

Opening the two-day summit, Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black said: “We’re here to listen to the community, to discover what people love about this city, to hear their dreams for what it can become, and to design together the principles that will guide the development of the University as it comes together in the city.

“Whatever we imagine, it has to be imagined together.”

Almost 200 participants – including students, staff, business and government representatives – spent the day discovering what they love about the city of Hobart, and dreaming about the city and the University’s place in it 10-15 years into the future.

Through song, skits, drawings and maps, participants explored key themes such as community, inclusivity, environment, transport and heritage.

Tomorrow, participants will take the threads from Day 1 to design a future for the city of Hobart.

All of the outputs from the summit will inform the University’s masterplanning process.
