The City of Stonnington’s new Sustainable Assets Policy details Council’s commitment and approach to environmentally sustainable design for all Council capital works projects – supporting emissions reductions and a climate resilient future. Supported by measurable targets and standards, the Policy outlines sustainability and climate adaptation considerations and expectations across the full life-cycle of Council’s assets.
Council manages a diverse range of assets such as buildings, parks, roads and drains, valued in excess of $2.3 billion. Design standards outlined in the Policy ensure that all Council capital projects showcase leading environmentally sustainable design from minor upgrades to major redevelopments and new builds, and ensures a consistent approach across all projects.
The Policy ensures that our building and infrastructure projects have limited environmental impact and are climate-ready. This includes projects that support emission reductions, improve environmental performance (reducing energy and water) and are climate resilient, as well as projects that provide cost benefits to Council and our community through reduced operating and maintenance costs.
Driving environmentally sustainable design and improving the comfort and health of the community is a key priority for the City of Stonnington. We’re not starting from scratch – a number of positive changes have already been made that highlight the integration of sustainable design within our assets, with the installation of 980kW solar panels on Council facilities, the introduction of water sensitive design in our parks and gardens (raingardens, structural soils, permeable paving), using recycled content in asphalt, concrete and street furniture, and transitioning away from gas in our buildings.
The City of Stonnington Sustainable Assets Policy supports actions and objectives outlined in the Sustainable Environment Strategy 2018-2023 and Climate Emergency Action Plan.
