No existing entrances have been permanently removed at Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve. The entrances on the Elwood side of the reserve will continue to be the main access points on the western perimeter, with the southern entrance point reopening soon following wetlands construction.
The project is one of the most significant urban wetland restoration projects undertaken in Victoria, restoring important habitat for local wildlife while creating new opportunities for the community to connect with nature.
As part of the project, Council has retained all existing entrances to the reserve and added two new access points to improve connectivity and public access. These include a new entrance at the corner of Bent Avenue and New Street, and a new entrance linking Elsternwick Park to the wetlands.
An additional entrance at the corner of Bent Avenue and St Kilda Street was considered during the planning and design process. While concept plans explored a ramp and stair connection at this location, it was not able to be delivered within the project’s approved budget.
Like all major infrastructure projects, Council was required to balance a range of priorities within available funding. The focus has been on delivering the core environmental restoration works, including the creation of new wetland habitat, extensive revegetation, improved visitor facilities, providing more opportunities for the community to experience this unique natural environment.
Council understands there is community interest in additional access points and will continue to consider opportunities should future funding become available.
When completed, Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve will provide significant environmental, cultural, educational and recreational benefits, helping to restore biodiversity, improve habitat for birds and other wildlife, and create a thriving wetland environment for current and future generations to enjoy.
