EOIs Open For East Point Reserve Advisory Committee

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is seeking expressions of interest for community members to join the East Point Reserve Advisory Committee.

The purpose of the committee is to inform and advise Council of issues around the reserve and monitor the implementation of the East Point Reserve Biodiversity Management Plan.

Members are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience, identify opportunities to enhance the reserve and improve collaboration with likeminded stakeholders.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he hoped to see applications from people who are passionate about balancing the environmental, cultural and historic aspects of natural areas.

“East Point Reserve is a special place for the people of Darwin and is one of the most popular recreation areas for locals and visitors,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“The Biodiversity Management Plan was developed to manage, protect and enhance the biodiversity of the reserve and the committee plays a pivotal role in ensuring the plan is implemented,” he said.

East Point Reserve is rich in history and biodiversity and supports a range of native fauna species including over 220 bird species, three frog species, 11 mammal species and over 30 reptile species.

Two positions are available for people who have knowledge and experience in the environmental and community sectors of Darwin.

The committee meets four times per year and is made up Elected Members; community representatives; and representation from clubs and groups in the local area, such as the Mindil Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, the Fannie Bay Equestrian Club, Larrakia Rangers and the Top End Native Plant Society.

The EOI is a competitive process and several criteria will be considered, including the applicant’s range of experience in environmental, historical and cultural planning of public open spaces.

Applications close on Friday 5 April 2024.
