Escapee Recaptured After Three-day Manhunt

Northern Territory Police have recaptured a 26-year-old escapee after an intensive three-day search, locating him at a Darwin River residence yesterday.

The man allegedly fled from NT Corrections officers before being sighted in Lyons later that evening, where he approached members of the public asking for a lift. He was refused, and police commenced an extensive search.

After three days on the run, information received by police led investigators to a residence at Darwin River.

At about 12:30pm yesterday, members from the Fugitive Taskforce and Dog Operations Unit attended a residence in Darwin River, where the man was arrested without incident.

He has since been charged by the Fugitive Taskforce with:

  • Escape from lawful custody
  • Assault a worker
  • Theft

During the operation, police also arrested a 45-year-old man without incident. He has been charged with:

  • Aiding escape from lawful custody
  • Breach of bail

Detective Sergeant Jon Spencer said this arrest is the result of persistent police work and valuable information provided by members of the public.

“Anyone who escapes lawful custody can expect a relentless police response.

“Police are also examining whether there are links between recent escape incidents, including whether offenders have received assistance while evading police.”

The 26-year-old has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear before the Darwin Local Court today.

Police investigations remain ongoing.
