More than $4 million in grants awarded to coastal projects

  • 35 coastal erosion, hazard, and management projects receive $4.09 million in funding thanks to CoastWA grants

The Cook Labor Government has awarded $4.09 million in CoastWA grants to support 35 projects addressing coastal erosion, hazards, and management across Western Australia.

Since 2021, the CoastWA program has now invested more than $22.4 million in grant projects that strengthen the State’s ability to manage and protect its coastline, including coastal monitoring, technical studies, adaptation planning, and capacity building.

The 2026-27 grants will support coastal land managers and community groups to deliver a range of projects, including on-ground works, coastal protection planning, and education initiatives to build resilience to coastal change.

Key recipients in this year’s funding round include:

  • Shire of Gingin – $458,250 for sand nourishment, design of emergency works, and a coastal processes study in Lancelin;
  • City of Mandurah – $1.5 million to support the design and implementation of coastal protection works at Doddi’s Beach, building on previous CoastWA-funded planning;
  • City of Fremantle – $175,000 to develop a Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan, including short-term actions and long-term adaptation pathways; and
  • Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions – $56,088 to install a safe beach access staircase in Yawuru Birragun Conservation Park, replacing a hazardous erosion gully and supporting recreation and cultural access for the Broome community.

These 35 CoastWA-funded projects have received more than $3.5 million in partner contributions.

Originally established as a five-year $33.5 million program, CoastWA was extended by a further three years in 2026 with another $24.1 million to be invested in the program.

“These grants are supporting local governments and communities to plan for and respond to coastal change with practical, long-term solutions.”
