EV tax passes lower house, bringing Victoria one step closer to becoming a laughing stock

Australian Greens

The Victorian Greens have urged the upper house to block the Victorian Labor Government’s proposed tax on people who drive electric vehicles, following its passage through the lower house today.

Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins, said the tax should never have survived the ‘laugh test’.

With transport being the fastest growing source of emissions in Victoria we need to scrap this tax and instead introduce bold incentives to encourage the rapid uptake of EVs.

As stated by Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:

“Today Victoria came one step closer to being the laughing stock of the world with the government’s proposed stand-alone tax on electric vehicles passing the lower house of state parliament.

“When transport is our biggest growing source of emissions in Victoria, and when Victoria is lagging well behind the rest of the world when it comes to the uptake of electric vehicles, Labor’s electric vehicle tax should not have survived the laugh test.

“We urge the upper house of state parliament to block the ‘worst electric vehicle policy in the world’.”
