Key infrastructure at the Spirit of Tasmania terminal is receiving its final touches ahead of the first official sailing of the new vessels.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the terminal building was nearing completion.
“We are building an even better Tasmania by investing in intergenerational infrastructure such as the Spirit of Tasmania terminal,” Minister Vincent said.
“When the new ships arrive, hundreds of tourists, locals and truckies will pass through these facilities each day.
“While the work on the building itself is largely completed, work on the building’s IT, communication network and commissioning continues, with the finishing touches to be finalised ahead of the first sailing on October 31.
“The construction of the terminal building has been delivered by local Tasmanian company, VOS Construction and Joinery.
“Across the life of the Devonport project, Vos and its subcontractors had more than 300 people involved with the work, both on-site and at the workshop.
“We know Tasmanians are excited to see the new Spirits sailing permanently up the Mersey in six weeks.
“These new ships will be a huge boost to our tourism economy and our freight network increasing capacity by 40 per cent – a game changer for the State.
“Some of our more than $5 billion of exports will pass through the facility, destined for the world.
“It is also the gateway that will welcome tourists from across the globe, who will now be able to arrive by sea in greater numbers than ever before.”
