Work has now begun relocating fauna from the Ocean Reef Marina site, as the long-awaited redevelopment moves towards the start of construction.
The relocation process will take place over five days and four nights, and is being carried out by experienced environmental consultants Terrestrial Ecosystems.
The local, family-run business will safely relocate any fauna, including reptiles and mammals, prior to commencement of construction to suitable nearby locations within the surrounding coastal bushland.
Sustainable and environmentally conscious development has been a key focus of the McGowan Government in planning for the new Ocean Reef Marina, which will deliver an iconic waterfront precinct, creating business opportunities and local jobs.
The development underwent a Public Environmental Review – the highest level of environmental assessment – and was granted approval to proceed subject to strict conditions.
These included the development of monitoring and management plans to minimise any impacts to marine water quality outside the marina and adjacent beaches, and measures to improve the management and protection of similar marine nearshore habitats in the Marmion Marine Park.
The local bushland has also been the subject of a Negotiated Planning Outcome, which has seen approximately 26 hectares of Bush Forever offset land and a commitment of approximately five hectares of onsite bushland rehabilitation.
The McGowan Government has committed $120 million in funding for the Marina over the life of the project, which is also expected to generate more than $500 million in private sector investment.
The project will be a magnet for commercial, recreational and residential activity on the coast, with capacity for 550 boat pens, 200 boat stackers and a diverse mix of around 1,000 new homes.
