Final grant round opens for truth, healing, and reconciliation

Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs The Honourable Leanne Linard

The fourth and final round of the Queensland Government’s Truth, Healing and Reconciliation grants program opens today.

Minister for Children Leanne Linard said they were looking for applications that promote truth-telling, healing and reconciliation through activities that raise awareness of institutional child abuse and its impacts.

“Grants of up to $10,000 are now available for individual organisations and up to $15,000 for joint applications,” Ms Linard said.

“Since the grants opened in 2019 there have been some wonderful projects funded, including memorial gardens, creative writing and music therapy workshops, health campaigns and the capturing of personal stories.

“While this may be the last round of funding for this program, the conversation about the impact of institutional child abuse and commitment to Queenslanders who have experienced harm continues.”

The Truth, Healing and Reconciliation grants program is part of the government’s implementation of the recommendations outlined in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

“These grants will help ensure we never forget what happened in the past and continue to support the healing and reconciliation process now and into the future,” Ms Linard said.

“People with lived experiences have shared that they have found some healing through these activities. The programs have provided opportunities to connect with other people who understand what they have been through.

“We know it’s important to expose the truth of what happened to children in institutions and the ongoing distress experienced by so many Queenslanders.

“The Queensland Government remains committed to learning from those experiences and contributing to the ongoing healing and reconciliation process.”

Applications for the Truth, Healing and Reconciliation grants program close on Wednesday 8 June 2022.

Activities must be for people with a lived experience of institutional child abuse and promote truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation as an ongoing process.
