The Finocchiaro CLP Government is investing $150,000 over three years to re-establish the Darwin Youth Orchestra.
Under the leadership of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, this announcement will build a sustainable, high-quality orchestral pathway that develops the next generation of NT-based musicians.
This funding delivers on the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s commitment to growth, certainty and security, while keeping talented young musicians living, working and playing at home in the NT.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is proud to announce the re-establishment of the Darwin Youth Orchestra (DYO), with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) awarded $150,000 from 2026-27 to 2028-29 to lead its return, securing another home for orchestral music education in the Territory.
The funding of $50,000 per year over three years will see the DYO rebuilt under the leadership of the DSO, giving the music community certainty and enabling long-term program development for young Territory musicians.
Under the mentorship of Darwin Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Dr Richard Mills AO, the Territory now has access to an exceptional level of artistic leadership and youth orchestra expertise which is seldom available in regional Australia. This presents a rare opportunity to lift artistic standards through a revitalised DYO, while mentoring and developing NT-based emerging conductors.
Minister for Arts and Minister for Youth, Seniors and Equality Jinson Charls said the announcement marked an important milestone and builds on the Finocchiaro CLP Government’s commitment to securing the future of the arts and the creative economy in the NT.
“Our commitment to growth, security and certainty means investing in the things that make the Territory a place people want to live, work and raise a family, and that includes a thriving cultural life. This funding is about restoring the Territory lifestyle our community loves and giving young Territorians the chance to pursue their passion for music right here at home,” Minister Charls said.
“Sustained Government funding to rebuild the Darwin Youth Orchestra will secure another NT music education pathway and support the economic and social returns that come with a strong local arts sector.”
Member for Fong Lim and Assistant Minister for Education and Training Dr Tanzil Rahman has been vocal in pushing for this funding commitment and welcomed the announcement.
“I’ve advocated for this because the value of reinvigorating our public music education offering cannot be underestimated,” Assistant Minister Rahman said.
“Kids who learn music do better with teamwork, academic performance, attendance and social cohesion. This is a practical, high-impact investment in the NT’s cultural and educational future. The Darwin Youth Orchestra was a proven model through the 1990s, and it’s time to renew it.”
Darwin Symphony Orchestra Chair Ms Claire Kilgariff thanked the Government for their investment and said the funding provides the DYO with the stability it has long needed.
“The Darwin Symphony Orchestra is deeply grateful to the Minister and the Northern Territory Government for this investment in young Territorians and for their vision in nurturing youth arts and culture,” Ms Kilgariff said.
“With the Darwin Symphony Orchestra providing artistic leadership, the Darwin Youth Orchestra will create a strong orchestral pathway that complements existing music education opportunities for young people in the NT.”
Darwin Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Richard Mills AO said the initiative would give Territory musicians a clear pathway to reach their potential.
“I am continually impressed by the depth of talent among young musicians in the Northern Territory. This initiative will give them a clear orchestral pathway to achieve their musical potential and place the NT alongside youth orchestra opportunities available across Australia,” Mr Mills said.
