The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering on its election commitment with an additional $1m investment to upgrade Gray Soccer Oval in Palmerston.
The funding which has a total investment of $1.25m will focus on various upgrades including improving drainage and field conditions to ensure more reliable use throughout the year, particularly during the wet season.
Further upgrades will support growing participation, including improved changeroom configuration and enhanced facilities for local competition requirements.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering on its commitment to support grassroots sport, injecting an additional $1 million to bring the total investment for Palmerston’s Gray Oval to $1.25 million.
The oval, home to the Palmerston Rovers Football Club, is a vital community hub used by players, families and supporters throughout the year, but has long been impacted by poor drainage and wet season conditions limiting use.
Acting Minister for People, Sport and Culture, Marie-Clare Boothby said the investment would mean that clubs and families can access Gray Oval all year-round.
“Gray Oval is one of the busiest ovals in the Top End, bringing together families from all over Palmerston to play, compete, and keep active,” said Minister Boothby.
“In the past, wet weather has made it really difficult to use the facility, particularly during the wet season.
“This $1 million investment brings our total commitment to $1.25 million, to improve drainage, upgrade the playing surface, and to keep Territorians active – crucial as we position the Territory as the best place to live, work, visit, and invest.”
The upgrades follow strong advocacy from local Member Clinton Howe who is proud to be delivering on an election commitment.
“After years of delay, this is what delivery for Drysdale looks like. The Palmerston Rovers have been asking for these upgrades since 2021, because Gray Oval has simply been held back by wet weather for too long.
“During the election campaign, I promised the club and our local soccer community that a CLP Government would deliver. This club is an incredible part of our community. Its growth shows the positive impact local sport has on families, young people, volunteers and the broader Drysdale community,” said Mr Howe.
The funding will target priority works identified in consultation with Football NT and the Palmerston Rovers Football Club, including improved drainage for playing fields and improvements to changeroom facilities to support participation and meet competition standards.
Palmerston Rovers President Byrne Haigh welcomed the investment, highlighting its importance for the local community.
“These enhancements to our facility will allow for Football to be played all year round and for the growth in participation levels across all age groups. This will enable the club to better service the people of the Palmerston area. This will also enhance our ability to facilitate both Male and Female teams of all ages.”
Through this investment, the CLP Government continues to deliver on its commitment to support local sporting clubs, strengthen communities, and enhance the Territory lifestyle.
