The fire spread to around 600 metres in length as crews battled against strong winds.

There were 14 CFA vehicles on scene, as well as police to assist with closing both the north and south bound lanes of the freeway.

Wandong Captain Yorin Miller said another fire was ignited around 60 metres east of the initial blaze as a result of the strong winds.

“The fire spotting from the centre median strip of the Hume Freeway to an area near Broadford-Wandong Road, which had grown to 10m x 5m in size by the time it was extinguished,” Captain Miller said.

“Crews worked well together and jumped on the spot fire as soon as it was identified.

“Wind was our biggest concern because it had swirled around a lot and was quite gusty at times.

“Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish any flare ups cause by the increase in wind.

“All personnel were proactive in their fire attack and we were able to prevent the fire from causing much damage.”

The fire was brought under control at 3.28pm and one lane was open in both the north and south bound roads at a reduced speed at around 4pm, before a stop was put in at 4.49pm.

Fire Investigators are working with police and a cause of the fire will be determined at a later date.
