Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner has welcomed news that the Queensland Police Service has laid charges over the alleged theft of livestock from farms.
“An investigation into the alleged removal of several piglets from a Pittsworth piggery has led to four people being charged,” Mr Furner said.
“One of these people has also been charged in relation to the alleged removal of chickens from a poultry farm at Canningvale.
“Charges include entering with intent and stock stealing, as well as infringement notices for breaches of the Biosecurity regulation.
“These are the first of these infringements notices to be issued in Queensland and carry a fine of $667.25 each.
“Farms are complex and potentially dangerous environments. Unauthorised entry poses a risk to everybody concerned, as well as livestock and food safety.
“Everybody has the right to feel safe and protected in their workplace and in their homes.
“While this government supports the right to protest lawfully, it is not acceptable for people to go onto private and/or commercial property without authorisation no matter their cause.”
