Five injured in road-rage assault in Granville

A man is under police guard in hospital following an alleged road-rage assault at Granville overnight.

About 7.15pm yesterday (Thursday 16 July 2020), a 25-year-old man was driving a car which was involved in a minor crash with a truck at the intersection of Factory and William streets.

After the crash, it’s alleged the man opened the truck driver’s door and punched the truck driver multiple times.

It’s further alleged that when members of the public attempted to intervene, they were also assaulted.

Police were called and officers from Cumberland Police Area Command attended and arrested the 25-year-old man.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains under police guard.

The truck driver, aged 60, was taken to hospital with a broken nose and other facial injuries.

The other men who came to the driver’s assistance – aged 40, 45, 29 and 21 – were all treated at hospital for a range of injuries including concussion, loose teeth, swelling and bruising, and have been released.

Detectives are waiting to interview the 25-year-old man once he is well enough; inquiries are continuing.
