Fixing Country Bridges Update

In 2021, council received $16.44M for the replacement of 23 of the 24 timber bridges in Dungog Shire, under the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges program.

While wet weather has heavily impacted this program, with 266 days being lost to rain during the past 12 months, significant achievements have been realised.

  • 5 bridges have commenced construction (Archinals, Bruxner, Mary Carlton’s, Hopson’s and Saxby’s), with the new Mary Carlton’s Bridge opening in December;
  • A further 3 bridges have commenced the design process (Banfield, Thalaba and Fosterton); and
  • An additional 6 bridges closed for tender this month and are currently under review (Middlebrook, Ryan’s, Chesworth’s, Ashards, Gam’s and Mate’s).

Council acknowledges the efforts of Project Manager Nick Havyatt and the Infrastructure and Assets team, in actively progressing the delivery of this program in a particularly difficult environment which has included staffing and resource shortages, COVID-19 disruptions and extreme weather delays.

Further updates will be provided as this program progresses.
