Four reserves have now fully reopened to the public following the end of the conservation cull component of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo Management Program as announced by the Conservator of Flora and Fauna in June 2023.
The following reserves have now reopened to the public without restrictions:
- Mulanggari Grasslands
- Red Hill Nature Reserve
- Pinnacle Nature Reserve
- Molonglo River Reserve – Kama section
The kangaroo cull has concluded at Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura Nature Reserves however Mount Majura and sections of Mount Ainslie will remain closed from 8:00pm to 3:00am on Tuesdays and Thursdays as part of ongoing rabbit control operations.
Fertility control activities through the ongoing use of GonaCon Immunocontraceptive Vaccine will continue as part of the Kangaroo Management Program.
The ACT has some of the largest and highest quality remnants of Natural Temperate Grassland and Box-Gum Grassy Woodland in Australia. Both ecological communities are now listed as critically endangered under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
To protect these ecological communities a total of 1,041 kangaroos have been removed by Conservation Officers.
Managing grazing by kangaroos is just one element of a broader program of land management aimed at protecting our lowland grassy ecosystems.
The ACT Government works closely with the community to undertake restoration activities, including planting trees and shrubs, preventing erosion and subsequent soil loss, and in managing introduced plant and animal species which pose further risks to biodiversity.
