Free Live Site for Matildas’ World Cup Third Place Play-off

Join us in showing support for the Matildas as we invite the community to come together to watch their play-off for third place against Sweden in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The City of Greater Geelong, supported by Deakin University are hosting a free live site at Steampacket Gardens this Saturday 19 August.

The festivities will kick off at 5:30pm, with the match scheduled to start on the big screen at 6:00pm.

Attendees are encouraged to wear green and gold colours, bring their favourite takeout or picnic food, and a cozy picnic rug, or a comfortable chair. Hot beverages and donuts will also be available for purchase on-site.

Mayor Trent Sullivan:

The Matildas’ remarkable journey and extraordinary performance throughout the tournament stand as a testament to their unwavering dedication and skill, reminding us that success transcends the outcome.

We couldn’t be more proud of the Matildas and their remarkable journey in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In addition to the live site, the City has been demonstrating its support for the Matildas by adorning Central Geelong in green and gold.

Last week, 50 Matildas supporter packs were given to Central Geelong businesses for shop front decorations.

The catenary lights at the Moorabool and Malop Street intersection have also been illuminating green and gold since last weekend and will remain until last game.

Various other displays and decorations can be seen throughout the municipality.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken:

We encourage everyone to come out in their finest green and gold attire, bring their own chairs or picnic rugs, and be part of this historic moment for Australian sports.

Let’s join hands, wear our green and gold with pride, and support our Matildas as they aim to place third in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
