Free Wetland Workshops

With Ecologist Dr Swapan Paul

Shellharbour City Council’s Environment Team will host a series of free workshops on Wetlands Health this Wednesday and Thursday.

Ecologist and wetland and sustainable management expert, Dr Swapan Paul, will visit Shellharbour to talk about the constructed wetlands in Shell Cove and Flinders.

These free community education workshops will address common questions and concerns Council receives from the community and will explain the purpose and function of constructed wetland environments.

Dr Paul will also discuss the common species and plants that inhabit wetlands, as well as questions and concerns about algae, reeds, sedimentation, safety and management approaches.

Medical entomologist, Dr Cameron Webb, will join the workshop on Thursday 30 June to share his knowledge on mosquitoes and environmental management.

The sessions will be held on Wednesday 29 June and Thursday 30 June at the Shellharbour Civic Centre, and will involve an on-site tour.

Shellharbour City Council Mayor Chris Homer said the workshops were a great way for the community to be involved and learn about our local ecosystems.

“Council often received questions from residents about our constructed wetland environments, so having an expert on hand to explain their function and answer questions is a wonderful opportunity for our community,” Mayor Homer said.

“I know that the residents who enjoy the wetlands in Shell Cove and Flinders take great interest in these areas. I encourage people to register for these informative sessions.” he said.
