Passionate about creating more liveable places in the Byron Shire? Please read on.

Council is looking for eight new members to join its Place Planning Collective – a group of community members, staff and Councillors who meet monthly and guide the implementation of actions for masterplans across the Shire.

The Place Planning Collective has been meeting since March 2020 and its inaugural members are at the end of their initial two-year term.

“We now have eight volunteer roles up for grabs that would suit people who are creative and strategic thinkers, and problem solvers, who enjoy being well-connected to their communities and are passionate about creating better outcomes,” Council’s Place Liaison Officer, Kristie Hughes said.

To apply, complete the Expression of Interest (EoI) form on Council’s website by 22 June 2022. Please note that Council is specifically seeking new members who can represent Bangalow, Mullumbimby and the Byron Arts and Industry Estate communities.

“How it works is that members of the Place Planning Collective promote their masterplan priority actions locally and are strong advocates for community participation. This results in projects that are aligned with the desires of residents and businesses which is a win-win for Council as well,” she said.

“There are currently masterplans in place for Bangalow, Mullumbimby and the Byron Arts and Industry Estate with a Federal Village Plan underway. The Byron Town Centre masterplan has its own separate guidance group,” Ms Hughes said.

The Collective has contributed to some key place-making projects championing better design outcomes and increased community involvement. These include:

  • Talking Street Trial, Mullumbimby
  • Stuart Street Green Spine, Mullumbimby
  • Shared Paths in Bangalow
  • Bayshore Drive Pocket Park, Byron Arts and Industry Estate
  • Centennial Circuit One Way Trial, Byron Arts and Industry Estate
