  • Cook Labor Government diversifying economy and supporting Western Australian producers and small businesses

The second round of the Cook Labor Government’s Farmers’ Market Grant Scheme is now open, with grants of up to $50,000 available to existing and prospective farmers’ markets across Western Australia.

The first round of the scheme delivered around $490,000 to 11 market operators, helping them strengthen their operations and build sustainable business models for the future.

Farmers’ markets provide an important platform for farmers, growers, and food and beverage businesses to sell directly to customers and showcase locally grown and made produce.

Recipients included the Scarborough Primary School P&C Association, which received funding for infrastructure, market development, and work to establish a sustainable business model for the new Scarborough Farmers Market, which launched in September.

As part of the scheme, farmers’ market operators can take part in a fully funded one-day course developed and delivered by the Western Australian Farmers’ Markets Association to help improve operations and long-term business sustainability.

Operators who complete the course can apply for grants of up to $50,000 for projects including infrastructure, planning and compliance, marketing and communications, and market development. After attending the course, operators can apply for grants up to $50,000 to assist with infrastructure, planning and compliance, marketing and communications, and market development.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis:

“Farmers’ markets are a great way for Western Australians to buy fresh local produce and support the farmers, growers, and small businesses behind it.

“Across WA, these markets bring communities together while giving local producers an important opportunity to connect directly with their customers.

“This funding will help market operators strengthen their businesses, improve their operations, and set themselves up for long-term success.

“I encourage farmers’ market operators to take advantage of this opportunity, and Western Australians to get out and support their local market.”
