Fun Bus and Fun in Park Celebrate 30 Years

All past, present and future families, community members and staff are invited to join in the in celebrating 30 years of the Fun Bus and Fun in the Parks.

The 30 year celebration will be held at Lake Alexander on 20 July from 3-7pm, with a Grand Bus Parade being held at 4.30pm. After the Parade will be mini Fun Bus races.

Fun Bus is a mobile playgroup, operating at set locations during the week, while Fun in the Parks operates during the school holidays. Fun Bus is aimed at children 0-5 years and Fun in the Parks for children 4-12 years. Both of the programs are free and have provided opportunities for children to play, sing, laugh and have fun in a relaxed, safe atmosphere.

“One of the joys of these programs is they bring together families from all social, cultural and economic backgrounds with a common objective – having fun with their children,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

Fun Bus has been jointly funded by the City of Darwin and NT Government for the entire 30 year period.

“Thousands of children and their families have been part of these programs,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis. In the past 12 months alone, over 10,000 children and 9,000 parents/carers have attended the two programs.

“The Fun Bus and Fun in the Parks hold a special place in the hearts of everyone who has been part of these programs over the past 30 years.”

Chief Minister of the Northern Territory Michael Gunner said “Over the past 30 years more than 30,000 families have participated in Fun Bus activities, creating new friendships in a joyful, friendly and accepting environment.”

“The celebrations on 20 July are in recognition of the impact the Fun Bus has had on Territory families.”
