Funding Boost For LGBTIQA+ Family Violence Prevention

VIC Premier

Every Victorian deserves to be safe – whether it’s at home, at work or in their community.

Horrifically, two in three LGBTIQA+ people experience family violence in their life.

That’s why the Allan Labor Government is backing the LGBTIQA+ community to tackle all forms of family and gender-based violence.

Minister Horne today announced funding to support organisations working to create a safer, more inclusive Victoria.

Supported by Rainbow Health Australia, they span media, sport, community groups and health services.

The funding will support programs that promote the prevention of family and gender-based violence, including:

  • Safe and Equal – supporting staff in LGBTIQA+ organisations to design and implement prevention initiatives and activities
  • Zoe Belle Gender Collective – building community capacity to tackle transphobia and homophobia
  • Thorne Harbour Health – working with unions in male-dominated industries to improve understanding of the impacts of gender-based violence
  • Proud 2 Play – working with sporting clubs to ensure they are safe and inclusive
  • Switchboard Victoria – broadcasting a podcast that explores the impacts of family violence on LGBTIQA+ young people and support for their families.

Each organisation brings its own expertise to different areas of the LGBTIQA+ community. But importantly, each promotes safety and inclusivity to all Victorians.

Victoria is the nation’s leader in preventing and responding to family violence – but there’s more to do.

That’s why Labor will continue backing the services that help keep all Victorians safe.

As stated by Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Melissa Horne

“No one should live in fear because of who they are or who they love.”

“We’re supporting these organisations to continue delivering important programs that prevent violence and build a safer Victoria.”

As stated by Minister for Equality Vicki Ward

“Victoria is the Equality State. We stand with LGBTIQA+ communities across Victoria; backing them in building safe spaces, preventing harm, and fostering a culture where everyone truly belongs and feels respected and equal.”

As stated by Jami Jones, Program Lead Rainbow Health Australia, ARCSHS, La Trobe University

“We can create powerful change for LGBTIQA+ people through working together. This partnership draws on the unique strengths of LGBTIQA+ community-led organisations and prevention of violence organisations.”
