Funding Casts Wide Net For Even Better Fishing

VIC Premier

The Carroll Labor Government is backing recreational fishing so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne today announced a nearly $1 million investment through the Recreational Fishing Grants Program.

The program will deliver grants to six projects to improve facilities, angler access and fish habitats.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) received nearly $274,000 to produce and distribute a range of education tools including the Recreational Fishing Guide and crayfish measures.

The Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs received a $220,000 grant to deliver up to 150 tonnes of additional complex woody habitat to improve the fish stock of golden perch and wild redfin at the Waranga Basin.

The Albert Park Yachting and Angling Club received a $217,360 grant to install an additional 200 pre-seeded oyster triangle structures as part of its shellfish restoration project at Kayaker’s Reef in Hobsons Bay.

Originally created in 2024, Kayaker’s Reef has boosted habitat, improved water quality and biodiversity while providing recreational fishers with a hotspot for snapper, calamari, and whiting.

The Red Tag Fly Fishers received a $105,000 grant to progress development plans to build the Australian Fly-Fishing Centre at Fairlea Reserve, Fairfield.

The West Wimmera Shire Council received a $25,866 grant to install a 75-metre-long galvanised steel handrail at the Lake Wallace jetty – improving angler access and safety.

The Recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded more than 600 projects worth over $21 million.

The Program backs Labor’s $96 million Go Fishing and Boating Plan which aims to position Victoria as Australia’s premier recreational fishing destination.

Jess Wilson’s Liberal-One Nation Coalition are a threat to recreation fishing through their $40 billion cuts plan – making it harder for Victorians to fish and enjoy the best of Victoria.
