Funding to support elite hockey teams through to Paris Games

  • Cook Government invests $400,000 to support Australia’s elite hockey teams
  • Kookaburras and Hockeyroos gearing up to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
  • Funding will also support preparation for this year’s Oceania Cup

The Cook Government has thrown its support behind our elite hockey teams with a $400,000 investment to help take the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos through to the 2024 Olympics.

The funding will support Hockey Australia and Hockey WA in their Paris 2024 Olympic qualifications processes for both teams.

It will support athletes and staff to focus on quality preparation, including the mental and physical training required to best position both teams to win Olympic gold. It will also support their training ahead of the Oceania Cup in August 2023, which is a qualifier for the Olympic Games.

The Kookaburras and Hockeyroos train in Perth, Australia’s home of hockey.

In December the WA Government, Hockey WA and the Western Australian Institute of Sport were successful in their combined $135 million bid to keep Hockey Australia’s High-Performance Programin Perth.

As part of retaining the program, the current facility at Curtin University will be transformed into a world-class hockey facility with three international hockey pitches, a specialist goalkeeper training facility, an indoor hockey centre and extensive recovery, gym and support facilities.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras have a long and proud history of success and we are pleased to support their hard work to achieve Olympic gold.

“Success is never automatic. The road to Paris will be challenging and both teams will need to stay focused to keep their world rankings in an increasingly competitive environment.

“Through this targeted, high-performance investment, the Cook Government hopes to give our elite teams the greatest opportunity to win.

“We wish them all the best with their preparations for the Oceania Cup and qualifying for Paris.”
