Further charges laid against an officer after crash, NSW

Investigators have laid further charges against an off-duty police officer after a six-car crash in Sydney’s south earlier this month.

Just after 7.15pm on Sunday 16 August 2020, emergency services were called to the Princes Highway, near Beach Street, Blakehurst, after reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Police will allege a BMW sedan and a Mitsubishi Outlander both travelling south collided, before hitting four other vehicles – a black Nissan, Volkswagen van, Suzuki SX4 and Skoda station wagon – in the northbound lanes.

The Nissan driver – a 38-year-old man – and his passenger – a 32-year-old woman were taken to St George Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles were not injured.

Officers from St George Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

The BMW driver, a 21-year-old man, was subjected to a breath test at the scene which allegedly returned a positive result.

The man, who is a constable attached to Central Metropolitan Region, was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station where a subsequent breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.126.

He was issued a Court Attendance Notice for drive with mid-range PCA and his licence was suspended.

On Monday 31 August 2020, the officer was served with additional charges, including drive manner dangerous, fail to stop and give particulars to other driver and fail to stop and assist after impact causing injury.

He is due to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday 1 October 2020.
