Further two men charged with murder of Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park, NSW

Criminal Groups Squad detectives investigating the fatal shooting of Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park nearly two years ago have charged an additional two men with murder.

About 7.30am on Monday 19 October 2020, emergency services were called to Simmat Avenue, Condell Park, following reports of a shooting.

A man was located nearby with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he died at the scene, and was later formally identified as 44-year-old Mejid Hamzy.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Criminal Groups Squad – in partnership with the NSW Crime Commission (NSWCC) and South West Metropolitan Region – established Strike Force Courier to investigate the shooting murder.

Detectives were also assisted throughout the investigation by officers attached to Raptor Squad and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Since that time, strike force detectives have charged two men – aged 38 and 44. They both remain before the courts.

During the investigation, police have conducted several public appeals for information and operational activities, including a coordinated search of Deepwater Park at Milperra in January this year.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives – assisted by the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) and South West Metropolitan Operations Support Group (OSG) – executed four search warrants at homes at East Hills, Panania, Bankstown and Padstow from 6am today (Thursday 10 March 2022).

During the searches, investigators seized cash, clothing and other items relevant to the investigation.

Three men – aged 28, 30, and 34 – were arrested and taken to Bankstown Police Station.

The 34-year-old East Hills man and 30-year-old Panania man were each charged with murder, supply prohibited drug more than large commercial quantity, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.

Police will allege in court both men shot Mejid Hamzy at Condell Park in 2020.

The 28-year-old Bankstown man was charged with supply prohibited drug more than large commercial quantity, two counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.

Police will allege in court the man supplied methylamphetamine on an ongoing basis between October 2021 and March this year.

All three men were refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court today.

State Crime Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Darren Bennett, said the tireless work of investigators has resulted in further murder arrests and will lead to more in the near future.

“Earlier this year we ran Operation Hawk with a very clear objective of taking out the henchmen of criminal syndicates operating within Sydney – and we did so with devastating success,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Bennett said.

“Today marks the beginning of a new operational phase where police will methodically begin locking up those responsible for the execution style killings that followed this Condell Park murder.

“These investigations are thorough and often take considerable time to resolve, so I thank the community for their patience while we gather the evidence and intelligence to wipe these criminals from Sydney’s existence,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Bennett said.
