From delivering essential supplies to sustaining military operations, logistics plays a vital role in Defence’s ability to remain ready, resilient and prepared for future challenges.
Logistics and engineering leaders from across the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the Australian Public Service and partner nations gathered from August 29 to September 4 for the 2026 Defence Strategic Logistics Seminar (DSLS).
Centred on the theme ‘Strategic Logistics in Support of the National Defence Strategy’, the event was aimed at strengthening leadership, strategic thinking and decision-making skills required to deliver the objectives of the 2026 National Defence Strategy (NDS).
Commander Joint Logistics Major General Carla Watts underscored the importance of collaboration in delivering Defence logistics and ensuring the ADF remains prepared for future challenges.
“The delivery of effective Defence logistics relies on the collective strengths of Defence, industry and our international partners with forums such as Defence Strategic Logistics Seminar, providing valuable opportunities to come together,” Major General Watts said.
“These engagements are critical to building the relationships, shared understanding and innovative thinking needed to ensure Defence logistics remains resilient, responsive and ready for future challenges.”
Royal New Zealand Air Force Wing Commander Vaughan Jones, Commanding Officer Materiel Support Wing Ohakea, said the event reinforced the value of working closely with partners to address common logistics challenges.
“No single organisation can solve tomorrow’s logistics challenges alone. Forums like DSLS allow us to share experiences, challenge assumptions and strengthen the relationships that will be critical to sustaining military capability when it matters most,” Wing Commander Jones said.
Throughout the week, participants engaged with senior Defence leaders, industry representatives, academic experts and allied partners, gaining valuable insights into, and deepening their understanding of, the challenges and opportunities that underpin Defence’s ability to generate, sustain and deploy military capability.
Seminar convenor Rear Admiral Ian Murray said the program was designed to broaden participants’ perspectives and prepare them for future leadership responsibilities.
“The Defence Strategic Logistics Seminar brings together the next generation of senior logistics leaders and gives them direct access to Defence’s strategic leadership,” Rear Admiral Murray said.
“For our mentors, it is also an opportunity to share the experiences that have shaped our own leadership journeys.”
As Defence continues to adapt to emerging challenges, DSLS remains an important investment in its people and capability.
